What can you say ‘bout a day like today
Nothing to do but, just while it away
But when I was younger there was so much to do
But time has tamed me
And mellowed me through
So just leave me here with a book and a beer
And my heart will be overflowing
With my years
Time was I often would stray to this place
This stream was my playground, these fields were my space
But tadpoles and sticklebacks soon are replaced
By the warmth of the day
And sun on your face
So just leave me here with a book and a beer
And my heart will be overflowing
With my years
So just leave me here with a book and a beer
And my heart will be overflowing
With my years
So if you can say that you’re proud of where you’ve been
And know you feel confident in your own skin
Then the hard part’s all done, and the good bit begins
And I’m taking time out To take it all in.
Just leave me here with a book and a beer
And my heart will be overflowing With my years
So just leave me here with a book and a beer
And my heart will be overflowing
With my years
Look on any corner, Jaci stands alone
one hand in her pocket and, the other on the phone, saying
“ Terry isn’t man enough”, and, ” We’ll have fun tonight”
seems Hell is on the left today
Heaven’s on the right
And so it goes, Life goes on, we live another day
Another new beginning, another chance to make a change
So it goes, Life goes on, but where do we begin
The pages turn so quickly now
It’s hard to take it in
At the back end of the Sport Bar, Terry sips his beer
He wishes he was out there still, and anywhere but here
Yet they tell him, he’s a lucky one - shame it doesn’t show
Surely there’s a better place
For our ‘lucky’ lads to go
So it goes, Life goes on, we live another day
Another new beginning, another chance to make a change
So it goes, Life goes on, but where do we begin,
The pieces move so quickly now
It’s hard to take it in
So it goes, Life goes on, we live another day
Another new beginning, another chance to make a change
So it goes, Life goes on, but where do we begin,
the pictures change so quickly now
It’s hard to take it in
At the back end of the Sport bar, Terry downs his beer
Taps in Jaci’s number but there’s nothing there to hear
It’s such a fine dividing line, in such a fading light
but - Hell is on the left
Heaven’s on the right
So it goes, Life goes on, we live another day
Another new beginning, another chance to make a change
So it goes, Life goes on, but where do we begin,
the pages turn so quickly now
It’s hard to take it in
Just look on any corner, Jaci stands alone
one hand in her pocket and, the other on her phone
You would have thought by now I’d be OK
I would be over you and on my way
You’d have your life somewhere - and I’d have mine
And I’d be right as rain in half this time
And if life was kind,
If life was fair
I would have walked away from this
Without a care
But Oh I cared so much
More than you know
And after all this time
It just won’t go
Now as I close my eyes I think of you
And all those awkward times that we went through
Life can be hard
Life can be cruel
It will not paper over cracks or suffer fools
Now I’m the fool again, back in my place
Here on my own again, egg on my face
How much I miss you
You can’t know
But I don’t want to
let you, go.
I don’t know where this song came from
But it’s here inside my head
And it’s been tugging at my shirt sleeve
To say something I’ve left unsaid
I should have said it years ago
But it’s, none the less, still true
Of all the girls in all the World
My heart belongs to you
Time is the strangest traveller
He’ll stay with us for just so long
And then, without a whisper,
He’ll be turned away and gone
And he kind’a steals those moments
So precious and so few
To say, of all the girls in all the World
My heart belongs to you.
Maybe its just a Man thing
To be so stubborn and reserved
And to know precisely what to say
But then never find the words
‘til something comes and bites you
Calling time - long overdue
To say, of all the girls in all the World
My heart belongs to you
I don’t know where this song came from
But it’s here inside my head
And it’s been tugging at my shirt sleeve
To say something I’ve left unsaid
Oh I should have said it years ago
But it’s none the less so true
That of all the girls in all the World
My heart belongs to you
Of all the girls in all the World
My heart belongs to you.
Wouldn’t you know it – its all gone wrong
Now you think the world’s against you
- but you’re wrong
All that he told you – just a bunch of lies
Now there’s nothing left to live for
In your eyes
But the world just turned, calm and unconcerned
As your young heart breaks, as your young heart yearns
But every day that passes
Another day returns
Cold Comfort – but the world still turns
Didn’t you see it – the day the waters broke
And they took out tens of thousands at a stroke
And while we’re all wondering where will this all end
Those waters rose and did it all again
But the world just turned, calm and unconcerned
As our forests fell, as our cities burned
As our oceans warmed
And our swallows don’t return
Cold Comfort – but the world still turns
Don’t you just love it – as the daylight ends
And you can paint a hundred pictures
As the sun descends
Beautiful moments – keep them in your mind
But the world just keeps them coming all the time
Yet the world just turned, calm and unconcerned
As your young heart breaks, as your young heart yearns
Another day is passing
Another lesson learned
Cold Comfort – but the world still turns
Cold Comfort – but the world still turns
Cold Comfort – but the world still turns
One life, only one life
precious moments on the Earth
But what you’re born to, or born to go through
may be a blessing, could be a curse
Some lives can be amazing,
but some lives can be so sad
Some get their chances far too easy
some prey for chances they’ll never have
Justice, there is no justice
in how we’re given our hand to play
We do not choose it, and we can loose it
but it’s not the winning
...it’s how we play
Your life is just amazing
it seems to blossom before my eyes
I see you giving without thinking
I see you reaching for the sky
One day, when you are wandering
Though the wonders of your life
and you come to, all those who love you
Just count your blessings, then count us twice
One day, when you are dreaming
And you need comfort in the night
simply look to, all you’ve been through
And know you did it
...and you did it right.
About the last week of May
Give or take a few days
But as certain as seasons come round
Homeless and poor, but like a circus on tour
Lord John would arrive in our town
In a coat of flaming red
A big old hat on his head
And his pockets full of magical things
A crumpled letter from the Queen
The biggest ring you’d ever seen
And seven silver buttons on a string
...and he said... don’t call my name
My head is high and I carry no shame
And until I am done I will follow the sun
And I’ll walk in the wind and the rain
Oh those stories he would tell, we all knew them so well
And we could whistle every song that he could sing
And with every story that he told, in his hands he’d always hold
seven silver buttons on a string
...and he said... don’t call my name
My head is high and I carry no shame
And until I am done I will follow the sun
And I’ll walk in the wind and the rain
Like his father before, John fought in the war
And he saw all of the horrors war could bring
And seven of his friends would never see these shores again
- seven, silver buttons, on a string
...and he said... don’t call my name
My head is high and I carry no shame
And until I am done I will follow the sun
And I’ll walk in the wind and the rain
By the forth of July we’d have waved him goodbye
Other faces other places beckoning
But I never will forget, Hey they live with me yet
Those seven silver buttons on a string
...and he said... don’t call my name
My head is high and I carry no shame
And until I am done I will follow the sun
And I’ll walk in the wind and the rain
Years ago I used to dream
‘bout the day I would be seen
the day I’d have my say
With no idea what I should do,
but all the confidence of youth
I set out to make my way
Then I began to build my tower
And it got taller by the hour
It got stronger by the day
But at the time I never knew
That for everything you do
There’s gonna be a price you pay
Oh, don’t let go,
You must know
That there’s so
- much more
Then when the people came to see
they didn’t know that it was me
they didn’t recognise my face
They saw some other mother’s son
a man that I could not become
another man stood in my place
Oh, don’t let go,
Don’t you know
That there’s so
- much more
Nowadays I’ve come to terms With things that I have learned and things that I have done I never dived for any pearls I didn’t try to change the world I just became what I’ve become
Oh, don’t let go,
Don’t you know
That there’s so
- much more
Bring me water
Bring me grain
Bring the sunshine back again
Fill the fields and paint the plains
Across the face of England
Twist the wool
Spin the yarn
Fat the cattle upon the farm
Build the bridges and fill the barns
In the arms of England
And yet it’s we, so keen to see
The show of hammered hands
And to point the poison finger
At our green and pleasant land
And though some may cross the water
But wherever they may stand
The sweetest rose still only grows
In England
In years to come
They may retrace
A powerful people a mighty race
A land of iron, a land of lace
For such a place was England
And yet it’s we, so keen to see
The show of hammered hands
And to point the poison finger
At our green and pleasant land
And though some may cross the water
But wherever they may stand
The sweetest rose still only grows
In England
Some may cross the water
But wherever they may stand
The sweetest rose still only grows
In England
You say you want to leave footprints in the snow
Where no-one else has been
you say you wan’na know where the swallow goes
and follow every dream
You say you need to sleep alone under the stars
And wish that it were so
Well far from me to be the one who holds you back
I’ve come to let you go
Now you say you didn’t mean it
All the words just came out wrong
You say you didn’t mean it
And its here where you belong
You say you’ve got to see the world at any cost
To discover who you are
You say you’ve seen so many faces of the lost
Who just wish on every star
But now you say you didn’t mean it
It’s just voices in your head
You say you didn’t mean it
But I heard the words you said
Now if I came to you and I said to you
Those things you said to me
How could you ever know if you should stay or go
Or just what to believe
Now I’m standing here
And nothing is clear
And I don’t know what to do
But if we’re ever going to be the same again
We gotta tell the truth
You say you want to leave footprints in the snow
Where no-one else has been
You say you want to see where the swallow goes
And follow every dream
Now you say you didn’t mean it
You could never go so far
You say you didn’t mean it
But I say …. “Au revoir”
Where life is fragile, love is strong
And love survives when life is gone
and I’ll be here where I belong
Look for me
‘cos there I’ll be
I’ll be the song inside you
Constantly
And if you should feel I’m far away
As you’re gazing out across the bay
Just turn around and face the spray
And look for me
There I’ll be
I’ll be the wave that’s dancing
On the sea
And we’ll be there
on our own
We’ll be there
And I’ll be home
Where the grass is overgrown
There’s a place we called our own
Where you need never be alone
Look for me
And there I’ll be
I’ll be the wind that’s waving
From the tree
And we’ll be there
on our own
We’ll be there
And I’ll be home
Come one all you Guys
and put your hands up to the skies
if you’ve ever messed up in your life
Hey don’t we swear it could never happen twice
But it’s the ladies though my friend
They’ll get you in the end
And I should know ‘cos they sure enough got me
When I was told this was the land of the free
But then, you’ll never burn your fingers
If you never light a fire
And you won’t fall off the tightrope
If you don’t step on the wire
And now I’m placing all my faith in such a little of her time
Oh we’re a long time gone my pretty one
And its all going on in my mind
For a second time
I should listen to my heart
Its says just stop before you start
And that’s OK, but I don’t know if I can
After all, I’m only a man
And where will this all end?
- a fair question that my friend
And I confess that I really don’t know
I’m on a wheel, and I go where it goes
But you’ll never burn your fingers
If you never light a fire
And you won’t fall off the tightrope
If you don’t step on the wire
And now I’m placing all my faith in such a little of her time
Oh we’re a long time gone my pretty one
And its all going on in my mind
a second time
Four in the morning.. And it’s so still
Silence is whistling in my ears
My eyes take time before they’ll show me where I am
Seems I’ve been waiting here for years
And years
Where are the birds when you need the break of day
Why does the sunrise rise so slow
Me, my guitar and my bag have made it all this way
Still just a little way to go
And I’ll be home
I’ve lived in this virtual place
I found out in cyberspace
I’ve got virtual friends
But they’ve got virtual faces
Oh take me home
I think I need to get home
Home
Home
Four in the morning… And its so cold
Every last person long since gone
Deserted stations must be the loneliest place on earth
How this night goes on and on
And on
I’ve lived in this virtual place
I found out in cyberspace
I’ve got virtual friends
But they’ve got virtual faces
Oh take me home
I really need to get home
Home
Home
Four in the morning…. And it’s so still
One Life was released in 2012 as a collection of the more recent of JDR’s compositions. Once again it was produced by Guy Fletcher (now Guy Fletcher OBE), the same Guy who produced John’s first albums on Chrysalis and who has been by his side ever since. This is John in a more stripped back style, simpler arrangements with total focus on melody and lyrics. We hope you will enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.
